I think there’s definitely room for semantic debate within media arts. If everything is a documentary why wouldn’t it be used that way by the general public? Language is usually reflected- directly influenced by society and the way people manipulate a language over time; it was never about who establishes that word as something specific in a paper. But anyway, the categorization by Nichols is surely interesting because I fail to see how you could only have two selections of “documentary” I feel like the detail to this is incredibly pointless. Regardless of what they both entailed. If this was a fact then you’d have to label every content creator as a documentary film maker, you could label infinitely and indiscriminately about anything metaphorically. Nichols premise kind of defeats the purpose of analyzing media. I think Nichols point is valid, but not objective by any means.
